MY STORY

Based in Brooklyn, NY, I split my time between the stage, the studio, and the classroom as a professional guitarist, composer, and educator.

As a performer, I’ve shared the stage with artists like Ron McClure, Vincent Herring, and Don Friedman.

And… as a composer, I’ve had the honor of scoring plays for writer Allan Knee.

Passing on my love for music is incredibly important to me.

Building on my Master’s of Music from New York University—where I previously taught—I currently instruct and lead clinics at the Trinity School, Collegiate School, and Q Studio Lab.

Schaeffer Guitar LightWhenever I play, I am proud to be backed by Schaefer Guitars as an endorsed artist.

ORIGINS

I was fortunate to grow up in the same city as my grandfather, a western artist by vocation, and was able to spend a great deal of time watching him at work in his studio.

GrandfatherHe would arrange photos atop a clean canvas from various travels, usually from West Texas and South America, and piece together images from these scenes as if uncovering a collage that was just beyond human sight. I never got the chance to ask him how he knew he’d completed something, as it’s something I would eventually learn is an ever-present obstacle in composing.

As I began compiling ideas for this album (a captured moment?), it occurred to me that several melodies had existed for several years already but were never quite ready, mindlessly marinating in another room, waiting for hopeful connection to another idea.

This may be the kind of thing that happens when you delay sharing your original work with people—things can kind of exist that represent a moment of excitement but little else. I started to think about my Paw-Paw more and more, who obviously exercised his visionary skill but also trusted in his own process, creating a scene that didn’t exist prior to his canvas. As I sat down to write more often, I started to trust my own process of doing. Songs start to realize themselves, as if to be uncovered from the subconscious. Ideas that sat dormant began taking shape in newer ideas as I became more disciplined in the work, as if connecting several moments in life.

Something beautiful; not overwrought; not pastiche; surprising; honest; hypersensitive but not detrimental; cheeky to the point of resonance; not stock this or that; speak the language of acceptance and forgiveness that can only flourish in an atmosphere of generosity and agreement; always cite the exception; groove; rock; melodies for searching; melodies for finding.

Melody - Robert Wolf SoundsAs a younger improviser and as a seasoned improviser, especially as a guitarist, there is a tendency to play too much; too many notes; abandon breath. A close friend who happens to be a brilliant songwriter set into motion the practice of writing singable melodies—a simple idea, but harder to execute when previously relying on the guitar exclusively as a writing tool.

Robert Wolf GuitarBluegrass Melody

There are songs on this record that yield more into what I hear as a “bluegrass melody,” that came from guitar topography, but I found that they “sang” more at certain tempi, etc. This took time. It all takes time, but this collection of songs took the time they needed and I’m grateful to be able to share them now.
